Nannette Manufacturing Co. Three large original photographs detailing New Jersey plant's work culture Philadelphia-based children's apparel company.

[140826] (NEW JERSEY - CHILDREN’S APPERAL) [Nannette Mfg. Co.].
: , . [Glassboro, New Jersey, ca. 1951.] The Nannette Manufacturing Company was founded in 1921. It has been described as “one of the oldest and best-known [companies] in the children's apparel market.” Early on, the company capitalized on what Daniel Thomas Cook has referred to as the “commodification of childhood” by producing trademarked Shirley Temple dresses for the toddler range. Nannette closed around 1990, in part, possibly, as cheap overseas children's clothing entered the United States market. These factory images from 1951 were likely produced for a commemorative purpose. The first photograph, 19" x 11" shows an exterior view of the Nannette Mfg. Co. captioned as “Plant No. 3, Glassboro N.J.” The second photograph is 19" x 15" depicts an excellent interior view of the entire factory floor. The workers all appear to be women and are sitting at their sewing machines. This photo is captioned as the “Sewing Dept. Plant No. 3, Glassboro N.J. 1951.” The last photograph is 20" x 16" also shows the interior of the plant. It offers a closer view of workers at their machines. It is titled in the photograph: “Nannette Mfg. Co. Gloucester N.J. Plant No. 2.” All photographs are attached to a backing board, two are matted. The interior views are especially noteworthy for their perspective and execution. $200

1872-1887 Common Council of Fieldsboro, Burlington County, New Jersey. Manuscript notebook of council chamber minutes and activities.

[141089] (NEW JERSEY - STREET LIGHTING) [Alex Laird, H.R. Carter, et. al.].
: , . [Fieldsboro, Burlington County, New Jersey: Various dates, 1872-1887.] Quarto, approx. 200 filled manuscript pages; first eighteen or so pages covered with old newspaper clippings, evidence of removal of approx. 20 pages at end. This manuscript notebook has leather backstrip and corners, and marbled sides. It is filled with fifteen years of local town government for Fieldsboro, New Jersey as recorded by different clerks in varying hands. The notebook is worn. The binding is broken. The front cover is detached, but within the pages are, in the main, securely bound, consecutive, and date-sequential. What is quite interesting about this particular notebook is how well it documents the community's overwhelming desire to be constantly involved with the installation, upkeep and uses of street and town lighting, apparently an on-going theme for the local office holders. The establishment of a Lamp Committee goes through all of the details of the pricing, specs, and placement of the lights and their various uses. As well, the council seems quite preoccupied, year in and year out, with discussing the street lighting, uses of the lighting, costs for their oil, wicks, and chimneys, payment to lamp-lighters, etc. Even a local organization, the nativist-oriented Order of the United American Mechanics, became involved by requesting city lighting for a night-time festival. One would infer that local officials felt that having a well-lit town in the late 19th century made for better publicity then the upkeeps of its streets. Other entries in the notebook detail the organization of finance, health, printing and street committees; property lines and disputes; fines for selling porter and ale without a license; payments for local printers for printing, books, and creating the borough's seal; appointments of judges collectors, bondsmen, and other public offices; motions to build a pound and a lock-up, etc. Also there are various lists of numerous individuals and their respective public offices with numerous pages filled with accounting and expenses billed to the town and/or pertaining to its upkeep. $250
