Creative Hands.
[140977] (MARYLAND - FURNITURE & BANKING) Herbert C. Fooks .
Federalsburg, Maryland: J.W. Stowell, 1932. 15 pages. First Edition? Signed by the author. Stapled pamphlet. Illustrated with twelve half-tones from photographs of numerous Sheraton and Chippendale chair reproductions and a portrait of this title's subject, Mr. J. Lagard Jones. Small edge chip to front cover; rear cover with some spotting, general wear. Not on OCLC. An interesting item, the pamphlet is devoted almost entirely to the career of Jones in U.S. government banking, the government's role in coining and regulating money, and the beliefs of Jones upon the subject. Regarding the chairs he is credited with embellishing or improvising upon as illustrated throughout, the author states that Jones is “...lost in a world of his own [making] fine handmade chairs. He follows the designs of the old masters generally but enjoys most adding embellishments thereon or planning new designs...” $45

[Given the task to] determine the boundaries of his province, he set men at work surveying the line in dispute with Virginia and by 1760 arrived at an agreement that eventuated in the Mason and Dixon's line. In 1769, in spite of the tact he had exercised toward Lord Baltimore, he was replaced by a brother-in-law of the proprietor.” Small loss of text at one fold; beeswax seal deteriorating, normal folds, printing is strong and dark, engrossed manuscript likewise so.
