In part: “I collaborated last winter with Galileo, Copernicus, and others to produce a fund of the planets’ best guesses concerning itself and others. I send you the result. It is I trust an indication of my appreciation of your interest in the problem of astronomy and of Harvard Observatory in particular....” Harlow Shapley , American astronomer, 1885-1972) was famous for his debate with Lick Observatory astronomer Heber D. Curtis before the National Academy of Sciences in April 1920. “This Shapley-Curtis debate subsequently achieved almost mythic proportions among astronomers, for it was a confrontation not only with respect to the size of the Milky Way, but also on the status of the spiral nebulae, which Curtis believed lay outside a relatively modest Milky Way ... Shapley pioneered methods for astronomical distance determinations that led to his discovery of the large size of our Milky Way galaxy. Later, he mapped the distribution of galaxies and was among the first to appreciate their large-scale clustering properties. As founder of the Harvard graduate school in astronomy and of their influential summer school in astronomy, he strongly molded pre-World War II astronomical education, and in the postwar era he also helped in the formation of the National Science Foundation.” - ANB] $650
